House fire on Terry Street damages neighboring homes in Houston

A house fire broke out early Sunday morning in Houston, spreading damage to at least two neighboring homes, according to the Houston Fire Department.

Houston Fire Department (HFD) crews responded to the 2800 block of Terry Street at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 18, 2026. Firefighters appeared to have the flames mostly under control by 6 a.m., roughly 20 minutes after crews arrived on scene.

HFD confirmed the home was vacant at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. Both homes neighboring the original structure also sustained damage from the blaze. Crews remained on scene until approximately 8:15 a.m. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.

A neighborhood staple

While no one was physically harmed, the fire carries a deep emotional toll for the family connected to the home.

Family members described the house as a neighborhood staple for years. They recalled their grandmother, who once lived there, as someone who regularly cooked food for neighbors — and said the feeling was mutual, with others in the community doing the same and gathering together for neighborhood hangouts.

The home has sat vacant for the past few years, but its significance to the family has never faded. Family members said the loss of irreplaceable mementos inside the home is the hardest part of the situation — items that no insurance payout or rebuilding effort could ever restore.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
