State will provide additional assistance to Ouray, Pueblo, Custer Counties for burn scar flooding protections

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Gov. Jared Polis announced today that the state will cover 75% of the non-federal cost share for the Emergency Watershed Protection projects that would look at flooding risks after the "Aspen Acres" and "Gold Mountain" fires in Colorado.

Gov. Polis says the support is being offered in Ouray, Pueblo and Custer Counties to help address next steps to protect homes and other infrastructure from flooding and other risks over as the two burn scars recover.

“Colorado is doing everything it can to secure support and help Coloradans recover from these devastating fires. Covering more of the local costs will help counties protect their communities, families, homes, and infrastructure from flooding while freeing up local funds for other recovery needs. I am grateful to our local and federal partners for working together to help these communities rebuild,” Gov. Polis said in a press release.

The governor's office says the funding stems from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Services. They cover 75% of the eligible construction costs, leaving the counties to cover the last 25%. The governor says the state will cover 75% of that county cost.

According to officials, that will reduce the costs the counties have to pay to just over 6%.
